Venezuela is in chaos. How did we get here?

Correction at 1:58: The Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error.

Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide.

But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans.

Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world.

These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013.

For more, don't miss the first episode of Vox Borders: Colombia. Johnny Harris traveled to Cúcuta, a city on the border between Colombia and Venezuela to see how the country is handling a massive wave of refugees fleeing the economic crisis. Watch: https://youtu.be/NU0RqwweuWY

+Vox
Could you do another video - this time on the collapse of the Washington DC coup attempt. Guido now admits peace talks are underway in Norway to mediate. Vox should divest itself from the far right agencies in USA and try to be balanced.

+Caractacus Vox is a Democratic Party pro capitalist mouthpiece. It is anti-Socialist and anti Chavista and it is nothing but pro-capitalist propaganda. For example: in the opening shots, they did not show even one of the majority of the Venezuelan people that support the Bolivarian revolution. They did however, show plenty of anti-Chavista who happen to be a minority in Venezuela. Then they go on to tell us that before Chavez, Venezuela was the richest country in South America. Well, it didn't really help the 99% of the Venezuelan that were dirt poor. The top 1% took all the riches to themselves and shared nothing with the 99% (sounds familiar?). As for democracy, the history of Venezuela is filled with coups and dictatorships all the way to Chavez who was elected by the majority of the people in elections that Jimmy Carter observed and called better and more democratic than the election in the US.

Bullshit

So why can't Vox just admit that socialism is the problem?

Because it's not. Corruption is. No matter which side, there will be corruption under the guise of something it isn't.

Humans can only be free if they change this system of surrendering all their power and wealth to politicians in the name of 'democracy'
