1:22 Am I seeing this right? 188yds with an 8 iron?

please stop being surprised at the distance young people can hit nowadays, it's not that special anymore, in the local youth tour(U18) I was just like 10 yards above average hitting an 8 about 165-170 yards and that was already 6-7 years ago I'm sure even in those few years the average got a bit longer

It is so crazy how the guys who drive it 300 plus, just eat these courses up. but them you got jim furyk up there grinding it out. Amazing individuals. Golf has changed , idk for good or bad yet, but if your last name is Rahm, Johnson, Mcilroy, Day, Champ. You have a huge advantage on most courses in this country. The USGA should create a tourney where you cant use modern tech. Only real woods and irons.

Distance overrated, yes and no at the same time, I feel it is rated correctly but for the wrong reasons. I for example hit my Driver very far especially for not being a professional, my longest Drive last season was about 350 yards, most of my drives were around 280-310 depending on wind and conditions obviously. My issue why driving that far is such a big deal for me: I am a terrible long iron player, especially from not ideal lies, but I am a exceptional good at pitching and short putts, if you put all this together it becomes clear that me driving far is the key for me to score because then I'll have 30-60 yards in on shorter Par 4s and every Par 5 is a good birdie opportunity for me. If I didn't have that long driving every long Par 4 would be a very likely bogey and since I am terrible from 5 iron to 3 wood in terms of distance control and not as accurate in direction either, I already have issues with long Par 3s. If you however are as good as Furyk with the longer clubs distance becomes less of a factor, as it makes less difference hitting in from 80 yards or 180. But for me it's legit half a shot of difference at least. This makes me a birdie machine on courses with Par 4s shorter than 360 yards and a candidate for 80+ on courses with many long Par 4s.

In my region there are courses where those distances hurt you more than they help. There are courses with many landing spots which are 10-15 yards wide with hazards or even ob waiting close to there and being in there requires either a miracle shot or more often than not a lay up I play at a course in which I pull out the driver 4 out of 18 holes and if I feel fancy for 2 risky eagle chances then 6 of 18.
